You never know when your number's up...
Background:
The Nines is a mystery drama about a troubled actor, a TV producer and a video-game designer (all played by Ryan Reynolds), whose lives begin to intertwine in mysterious and unsettling ways, particularly regarding the omnipresent number 9...
Review: The trailer is a great deal of fun, although it does reveal a bit too much for those who like to watch movies "untarnished". So be warned! Things begin like a typical haunted house trailer (even including a spooky
Ring-style phone call), before hinting at
Number 23 territory. But then things take a weirder turn, combining elements of
The Matrix with
The Truman Show... and computer game
The Sims? It's bright, fast-paced and does a decent job of grabbing your interest.
Prediction: Ryan Reynolds is due a breakout hit after years of torment: he was the best thing about
Blade Trinity, gave a decent performance in
The Amityville Haunting remake and can even do low-brow comedy (
Van Wilder). The script has been favourably reviewed online, coming from
John August (
Go,
Big Fish), who also makes his directorial debut here. The trailer doesn't scream originality at me, but it does look to be an enjoyable ride into a paranoid adventure.
