The Best Television of 2015: No.2 - NBC's HANNIBAL

FBI consultant Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) pursues exposed cannibal serial killer Hannibal Lecter (Mads Mikkelsen) across Europe, joined by outside forces with nastier intentions, before working on a case involving a man called Francis Dolarhyde who believes he's transforming into the living embodiment of a William Blake painting...

What made it so good? There's simply been nothing on television as artistically sadistic as Hannibal, and for its (sadly) final year we got two-seasons-for-the-price-of-one. First, there was the game-changing storyline where Will had to find and catch Lecter in Italy, which riffed on the novel Hannibal to fine effect—with Will digging into Lecter's family history, whilst the cannibal killer's spree continued in Europe. Then, arguably the show's raison d'être arrived in the second-half, with a surprisingly faithful retelling of Red Dragon (already filmed twice) that nevertheless didn't become a chore to sit through because of the show's twists on the material—plus a benchmark-setting performance by Richard Armitage as Francis Dolarhyde.

NBC's AMAZING STORIES returning with HANNIBAL's Bryan Fuller in charge

Do you remember the anthology drama AMAZING STORIES that ran from 1985-87, executive produced by Steven Spielberg? It was the E.T generation's Twilight Zone, basically. Only 45 episodes were made before NBC cancelled it after two seasons, but during that time it earned 12 Emmy nominations and won 5. Well, it's coming back! And this time with Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Hannibal) replacing Spielberg as head honcho.

Review: HEROES REBORN – 'Awakening' & 'Odessa'

What's the premise? It's Heroes, dummy. You remember. NBC's hugely successful superhero drama from 2006 which flamed out spectacularly with audiences thanks to a crappy second season (not helped by meddling network interference, it must be said). Only truly dedicated fans continued to watch until NBC finally axed it in 2010 after four seasons.

Is America's remake of SATURDAY NIGHT TAKEAWAY the BEST TIME EVER?

It's fascinating to me when successful British TV formats don't work when translated for our American cousins. The U.S have remade ITV's light entertainment hit Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, which debuted on NBC a few days ago. They're airing Best Time Ever on Tuesdays because weekend TV in America is mostly a wasteland (as advertisers believe the lucrative 18-34 demographic are out getting wasted, not watching TV indoors), with the possible exception of Sunday evenings when lots of popular cable drama's broadcast.

Pilot watch: NBC's BLINDSPOT

What's the premise? Blindspot is a new NBC mystery drama, created by Warner Bros. Television. It concerns the discovery of a naked tattooed woman in Times Square, dubbed 'Jane Doe' (Jaimie Alexander), who's lost her memory and can't even remember who she is. The FBI become involved when someone notices a tattoo on Jane's body is the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller (Sullivan Stapleton).
