TRAILER PARK: The Eye

Saturday, 13 October 2007
Don't hide what you can see.

Background: The Eye is a remake of Hong Kong film Jian Gui (2002), about a blind woman who is given an eye transplant that allows her to see into the supernatural world. Jessica Alba (Fantastic 4) plays blind girl Allison, alongside Parker Posey and Alessandro Nivola.

Review: This was actually quite a refreshing trailer! No rumbling voice-over. No subtitles. No dialogue. Just a thumping soundtrack that reminded me of Requiem For A Dream, and visuals that deliver the premise, but don't spoil anything. It looked slick and interesting. The final jump-scare was also effective -- despite being a blatant steal from Night Watch.

Prediction: The directing combo behind behind Them have had scenes of The Eye re-shot by Patrick Lussier (editor of such "masterpieces" as White Noise 2, Cursed and Dracula 2000), which isn't a good omen. That said, purely on the basis of this trailer, I'm moderately excited.

The premise is great for high-concept horror and Jessica Alba (despite not "acting" in the trailer) is a physically-appealing Scream Queen. I think The Eye will do solid business if the finished movie is as slick and intriguing as the trailer. Just don't short-change horror fans and give us the next Grudge, when we want the next Ring.
