I'm yet to be convinced of McG's talent as a multi-faceted director, but I admit the Charlie's Angels movies are slick, energetic, and crazy enough to be guilty pleasures. Exactly as they should be.
But I'll cut the guy some slack now, because he has just managed to pull off the perfect casting decision for T4. And it's quite a coup...
Christian Bale will be playing the adult John Connor!
I've been a huge fan of Bale since American Psycho, and I'm glad he made a successful jump into the mainstream with Batman's revamp. Bale's one of the most committed and talented actors working today – just watch The Machinist and The Prestige if you need proof.
Bale also looks exactly how you'd imagine an adult John Connor would look, so I'm very excited about this news. Now, if they can confirm Vin Diesel as a Terminator, I'll be in movie heaven. Oh, and a cameo for Arnie is surely a requirement?
So can McG pull it off? His post-Charlie's work has been more tonally consistent and interesting, so there is hope. I think many people are just expecting the hyperactive style of his Charlie's Angels flicks to be transferred onto a darker palette for T4 – which clearly won't happen.
Anyway, McG's definitely no slouch behind the camera, so I'm actually more worried about the script. T3's storyline was okay, but it was too humorous and lacked the nihilistic, violent, gritty edge of Cameron's plots. Surely those things will be back for a sequel that takes place during a human/machine war in the future?
Great news, basically – which is music to the ears of a Terminator fan disappointed by T3 and nervous about The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
