Background: J.J Abrams (creator of Alias, co-creator of Lost, director of M:I-II, producer of Cloverfield) takes charge of this Star Trek prequel. The film will focus on younger versions of the Original Series' classic characters, most notably Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Heroes' Zachary Quinto as Spock, Karl Urban as Dr McCoy and Simon Pegg as Scotty.
Eric Bana has been cast as the film's villain, Winona Ryder will appear as Spock's mother, and the iconic Leonard Nimoy himself will play the older Spock. Exact story details have yet to be revealed.
Review: This is a very brief tease that shows the U.S.S Enterprise being constructed (seemingly on Earth), with technicians and welders crawling over the legendary spaceship, complete with NASA audio clips and Leonard Nimoy narration. For Trekkers, the music, Nimoy's distinctive voice, and the general tease will be enough to get their hearts pumping...
For casual fans and general audiences, there's no denying this looks like a back-to-basics, realistic take on the Star Trek idea already. The Enterprise looks like something you can really believe in, and if that level of detail and care continues into the film itself...
Prediction: ... Star Trek stands a chance of being reborn after the depressingly vapid Next Generation movies, limp Voyager and boring Enterprise. The casting seems a bit crazy in places, with Abrams banking on the chemistry/abilities of a bunch of relative-unknowns, while an early script review criticized some changes to Kirk's character, but I'd never bet against J.J Abrams pulling this off. The guy has yet to put a foot wrong with anything he's been involved with, and I doubt he'd tackle something as big and beloved as Star Trek without a clear plan...
