MUST WATCH: The Prisoner

Tuesday, 18 March 2008

ITV4 are re-running cult science-fiction series The Prisoner, to celebrate Patrick McGoohan's 80th birthday. McGoohan co-created and starred in the series, which ran for just 17 episodes between 1967 and 1968. Despite a short existence, its impact has been huge, and it remains an influential series 41 years later...

It's the story of a former British secret agent who resigns from his job, only to be gassed and transported against his will to "the Village"; a bizarre place with strange architecture, populated by curious characters. After being branded "Number 6" by the controlling force behind the Village, the man tries to escape this curious prison before his captors discover why he resigned...

You can still see echoes of The Prisoner in Hollywood films like Dark City, The Matrix and The Truman Show, and even recent TV series like Lost and Cape Wrath. A television remake was planned by Sky (before being scrapped last summer), and a Hollywood film adaptation has been rumoured since the 90s, with nothing ever coming of it...

Anyway, I'm sure you know all this. If you haven't yet seen The Prisoner, now is a great opportunity to discover this iconic, enduring classic...

The Prisoner -- Wednesday 19 March, ITV4, 8.00 pm
