Terminator 4: Concept Art

Saturday, 24 May 2008

Is it time to get quietly optimistic about Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins? It still has an unwieldy title, but the idea of a future-set trilogy without Arnold Schwarzenegger is growing on me. That's probably because the Schwarzenegger-less TV series The Sarah Connor Chronicles wasn't a total dud.

There must be something good about the script to attract Christian Bale, who it's now confirmed as playing the adult John Connor in all three films. As I've said before, this is perfect casting in my eyes -- particularly as Bale isn't the type of actor who would sign on for a big commercial film without belief in the script and director (see Batman Begins and The Dark Knight).

The supporting cast is also intriguing: Charlotte Gainsbourg (replacing Claire Danes as Kate Connor), Sam Worthington, rapper Common, Moon Bloodgood, and Anton Yelchin. The latter is playing a young Kyle Reese, which is kind of odd. But, maybe it'll work. I just don't see the likeness between Yelchin and Michael Biehn, physically or in attitude.

Charlie's Angels' McG has started principle photography and, in an attempt to alleviate fears many fas have, he's released a new production diary. In it, he mentions the fact he's spoken to James Cameron (who we know suggested casting Worthingon), Arnold Schwarzenegger, and has secured the services of Terminator FX maestro Stan Winston.

Plus, he's released a concept drawing of the film's post-apocalyptic L.A (see above), and it looks pretty good. The previous films all showed the future as a black-grey junkyard, but this resembles something more from I Am Legend -- with foliage creeping back into long-abandoned buildings. It's nothing extraordinary, but I'm more excited about seeing the man versus machine struggle continue onto the treets of the future now. How about you?
