The Wrong Door: opening soon on BBC Three

Saturday, 9 August 2008

I'm no fan of BBC Three's output, particularly their sketch shows, but The Wrong Door has certainly grabbed my interest. It's set in a parallel universe where specials effects are part of everyday life, meaning photocopiers transform into cars, T-Rex's eat people in pubs, giant robots knock buildings down like dominoes, office workers are attacked by their computers, wizards and monsters are commonplace, etc.

It has a very eclectic cast, too: Brian Blessed, Pippa Haywood (Green Wing), Alex MacQueen, Rasmus Hardiker (Saxondale), MyAnna Buring, Burt Kwouk, Ingrid Oliver (Peep Show), Miles Jupp (Balamory), Lucy Cudden, Lorna Watson and Humphrey Ker. Guest stars include Matt Berry and Neil Fox.

The trailer is definitely worth watching here, although it's clearly been designed to just make you gawp at the FX. It certainly looks very inventive and expensive, but every sneak peak sketch appears to focus on twisting expectations with computer graphics. I just hope snazzy CGI isn't the only thing The Wrong Door has going for it...

I guess we'll find out on 28 August when this six-part series begins.
