BBC2 grasp The Wire

Thursday, 12 March 2009
There's this new show called The Wire. Have you heard about it? Well, BBC2 have confirmed they're going to start showing this gritty US crime drama from the end of March. There are already 60 episodes made and ready for broadcast. Sixty! Isn't that amazing? Now THAT'S self-belief.

Okay, sarcastic mode off. Good news for fans, but better news for people fed up with hearing about how marvellous The Wire is, and being pressured to buy DVD box-sets. Now they can see for themselves. The Wire has only ever aired on FX in the UK, so this will be its terrestrial debut, nearly a year after the show aired its final, fifth, conclusive season on HBO in the US.

BBC2 will air all five seasons, with multiple episodes shown throughout the week. Update: they will actually be showing one episode every weeknight, so will get through a season in just over 2 weeks, and the entire series in three months.

Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two:

"The Wire is an exceptional series that will complement the range of distinctive and original UK drama available to viewers on BBC Two."

Sue Deeks, BBC Television's Head of Series, Programme Acquisition:

"We are delighted to offer terrestrial viewers the opportunity to watch this ground-breaking series; it's a wonderful chance for everyone to see what the critics have been raving about for so long."
