TRAILER PARK: Gamer

Friday, 22 May 2009

Here's a movie that's a under the radar right now, probably because it resembles a direct-to-video effort that steals ingredients from a handful of better sci-fi movies (The Matrix, The Running Man, Avatar) -- although it does have a decent-sized budget and a few names to its credit. Gamer is set in yet another near-future world where online gaming technology is used to control the bodies of convicts, so your average spotty nerd can manipulate human beings in real, war-like situations and environments.

Okay, so it's grossly derivative and ready to get dumped at the back-end of summer, but it could be mindless fun for a Friday night DVD n' pizza. Reasons to be excited? Gerard Butler stars and has crunched his abs back to 300-style proportions, and Michael C. Hall (TV's Dexter) gets to have fun as the hammy villain (complete with thick Southern accent.) Reasons to be disheartened going in? It also stars rapper-turned-actor Ludacris, John Leguizamo, Heroes' Milo Ventimiglia (playing "Rick Rape"!) and comes from the writers/directors of Crank and Crank: High Voltage. Or maybe that's a recomendation in some people's eyes?
