Greg Brenman, Tiger Aspect head of drama:
"We have been immensely proud to be the most recent custodians of the Robin Hood legend. From the outset it was our ambition to find an exciting and modern way of interpreting our version of the hero and his legendary life. We have had a fantastic time creating and producing Robin Hood, working with some of the most talented actors, writers and directors in our industry. We are sad to be saying goodbye to this much-loved project but we are extremely excited by our upcoming BBC drama commissions –- of which more to follow."[SPOILERS] The final episode of its third series aired last Saturday, featuring the heroic deaths of Robin Hood, redeemed baddie Guy of Gisbourne, and the nasty Sheriff of Nottingham. [SPOILERS END]
Frustratingly, that climactic episode was shunted to BBC2 to make way for Wimbledon last week, resulting in the series worst ever ratings (1.7 million). Still, Robin Hood may have faced criticism in the press, but it was never a ratings disaster for BBC1. The show often got around 8 million viewers and has performed very well in overseas sales.
Personally, I'm glad they've decided to quit while they were ahead. The show could have continued with a new hero and villains, but last week's conclusion felt like the perfect time for Robin Hood to hang up his arrows. Does everyone agree? Or are some you upset Clive Standen's Archer won't get a chance to lead the merry men next year?
