(left-right) James Buckley, Kellie Bright, Shaun Dingwall & Phil Daniels
I still have doubts about Sex, Drugs & Rock'n'Chips (the Only Fools & Horses prequel), mainly because it sounds like an awfully bad idea and writer John Sullivan's post-OFAH output has been pretty terrible. But, I have to admit, this one-off special (which I assume will become a series if it's a success) has just put together a great cast...
James Buckley (The Inbetweeners) will play the teenage Del Boy (unexpected, but perfect!), Kellie Bright (Ali G Indahouse) and Shaun Dingwall (Doctor Who) will play his parents Joan and Reg Trotter, Phil Daniels (EastEnders) is Del's younger grandad, Robert Daws (The Royal) is playing Joan's boss, and Nicholas Lyndhurst himself will appear as Freddie "The Frog" Robdal (essentially playing the biological father of his Only Fools character Rodney!)
Filming begins this Monday, for broadcast next year. Is the interesting casting enough to change your opinion about this '60s-set prequel? Buckley, Dingwall and Daniels sounds like a strong line-up to me. I'd never have thought of Buckley to play a younger David Jason, but now it makes perfect sense. And is Lyndhurst's involvement a sign that the script's worth getting involved with? I mean, he's never bothered turning up for a cameo in turgid spin-off The Green Green Grass, has he?
