'In Treatment' back for session 3

Friday, 10 September 2010

HBO's excellent drama In Treatment returns for a third season on 25 October, starting with two nights of double-bills. Unlike the first two seasons (which were based on storylines from the Israeli original BeTipul), this year's plots will be wholly original.

If you're unaware, In Treatment follows the therapy sessions for various characters by psychotherapist Paul Weston (Gabriel Byrne), airing in a unique format where each weekday's half-hour episode focuses on a different patient, who return each week. Actors confirmed to appear in season 3 are Debra Winger, Irrfan Kahn, Dane DeHaan and Amy Ryan (The Wire).

I was a latecomer to this show, and have yet to see season 2, which has been extraordinarily slow in getting a DVD release in the US or UK. Thankfully, there appears to be some movement on that, if still no firm release date.

Sky Arts (who premiered In Treatment in the UK last year) show no sign of airing the second season yet, either. It's very frustrating, as a box-set marathon of season 1 was one of my favourite TV experiences this year, and the show definitely deserves more mainstream success. So many people don't even know it exists, especially in the UK.

If anyone with industry clout is reading this; In Treatment would be perfect for weekday afternoons on BBC2. How about it?
