Most of the discussion about Sherlock concerns when it's coming back! It airs so briefly when it does return, that within a month fans are back to wondering when the next three episodes will be. Well, wonder no more!
Sherlock will begin filming in January 2015, with a three-part fourth series filming later in the year. One assumes this means a Christmas 2015 special and three episodes later in 2016.
Cause for celebration? Well, sure, but we're still facing another 18-months before a new episode airs, and possibly two years before series 4 starts! It feels like the BBC are trying to sweeten the excessive waiting time with the addition of a fourth instalment, which is fine. Sherlock fans are used to waiting a very long time for the characters to return, too.
The plot teaser for the next episode reads thus:
After the briefest of exiles, Sherlock will return to face one of his biggest mysteries yet... why is Moriarty's face being broadcast on every television in the land?
Steven Moffat, co-creator, also made this statement:
"A special, plus a new series of three episodes—it's a record-breaking run! Of course, it's far too early to say what's coming, but we're reasonably confident that the very next thing to happen to Sherlock and John is the very last thing you'd expect."Mark Gatiss, the other co-creator, added:
"Series four! At last ! It's always special to return to Sherlock but this time it's even more special as we're doing... a special! Not only that, we'll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before. The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on—again!"How do you feel about this news? Grateful we'll be getting an additional Sherlock episode for Christmas? Happy but still annoyed there are such huge gaps between series, thanks to Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch being so busy? Bit of both? Yeah, me too.
