Who should star in a female-orientated GHOSTBUSTERS?

Sunday 3 August 2014
It's strongly rumoured that director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat) has become Sony's top choice to direct their eternally gestating GHOSTBUSTERS III.

Unfortunately, everyone's grown so tired of rewriting that script to work as a direct sequel (that may but probably won't star Bill Murray, but can't star the late Harold Ramis), that Feig may just reboot the whole thing.

Even more surprising, the updated Ghostbusters may become an all-female affair in Feig's hands. I'm not sure if this claim is accurate (or is just a theory because Feig's previous hits have all been heavy with the oestrogen), but it's interesting to imagine who might appear in a distaff Ghostbusters.

So let's look at some potential candidates:

Tina Fey
Age: 44
You know her from: Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, Date Night.
Which role? The Egon Spengler nerdy one. (She's been known to wear glasses, right?)

Kristen Wiig
Age: 40
You know her from: Saturday Night Live, Bridesmaids, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
Which role? The Ray Stantz enthusiastic one.

Mindy Kaling
Age: 35
You know her from: The Office, The Mindy Project, This is the End.
Which role? The Peter Venkman sarcastic one.

Melissa McCarthy
Age: 43
You know her from: Bridesmaids, The Heat, Identity Thief.
Which role? The Winston Zeddemore down-to-earth one.

What links those funny women? Well, both Fey and Wiig earned their comedy stripes working on Saturday Night Live, just like original stars Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. With the exception of Kaling, they're all over-40, too, which does make them roughly a decade older than the original gang were in 1984.

Would the studio really want middle-aged women heading up a potentially long-running reboot of a beloved franchise? Maybe not. Okay, some younger considerations....

Ellie Kemper
Age: 34
You know her from: The Office, Bridesmaids.
Which role? The Ray Stantz enthusiastic expert one. (She does enthusiastic so well it hurts.)

Alison Brie
Age: 31
You known her from: Community, Mad Men.
Which role? The Egon Spengler nerdy one. (Too much of a stretch?)

Emma Stone
Age: 25
You know her from: Zombieland, The Amazing Spider-Man, Easy A.
Which role? The Peter Venkman sarcastic one.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw
Age: 31
You know her from: Spooks, Undercovers, Touch.
Which role? The Winston Zeddemore down-to-earth one. (I know she isn't a comic actress, but Ernie Hudson wasn't a comic actor.)

Is that any better?

Do you give your blessing to a gender-swap Ghostbusters remake? Or would you prefer to see another all-male line-up, a proper sequel with the remaining original cast, or a more equal mix of sexes bustin' spooks?
