I desperately want AMC's BETTER CALL SAUL to be a good show, even if it will inevitably fall under the shadow of forbearer Breaking Bad. It will be fun to see Bob Odenkirk as Saul (cryptically referred to as Jimmy in this trailer), and Jonathan Banks returns as grouchy fixer Mike, but otherwise I'm not entirely sold on the idea of a Breaking Bad spin-off prequel.
Clearly it exists because AMC will have no must-watch shows once Mad Men ends next year (ignoring the inexplicable phenomenon of The Walking Dead, which they're also spinning-off), so appealing to an existing fan-base makes sense. And this show does come with the Vince Gilligan seal of approval, as co-creator. But I'm still preparing for an 'entertaining pastime' rather than anything in Breaking Bad's top league, and anything else will be a pleasant surprise.
What about everyone else? BETTER CALL SAUL premieres 8 February 2015.
