I haven't mentioned this on DMD before, but classic '70s sci-fi Survivors is being remade and will air on BBC1 later this year. The original 1975-77 series, created by Terry Nation, concerned a worldwide plague that wipes out most of the planet's population, leaving just a few survivors...
The new series is being masterminded by Adrian Hodges (Primeval) and will star Freema Agyeman (Doctor Who), Julie Graham (Bonekickers) and Max Beesley (Hotel Babylon).
Hodges, speaking to Sci-Fi Wire:
"[Survivors] confronts our deepest fears when everything else is stripped away. Do you fall apart or fight or retreat? ... We completed the pilot and it's ready to premiere, and we're well into shooting the second block."
Is anyone excited by this? Survivors was before my time, but I remember seeing a few repeats in the late-'80s and enjoyed them. I like Hodges' Primeval, but it's hardly deep and intelligent sci-fi -- which is what a post-apocalyptic drama should be, surely? Will Hodges bring the same easygoing cheesiness to this, or will he raise his game? Is the presence of Freema Agyeman a good thing, or just a way of dragging in the Doctor Who crowd? Will we be getting Bodies' Max Beeseley, or Hotel Babylon's Max Beesley?
